The Ethiopian Custom Commission has disclosed that it seizures of various contraband with a duty paid value of 1.1 billion birr over the past five months, reported Ethiopian Press Agency.
According to Ashenafi Basa, Law unit head at Custom Commission, a total of 1.1 billion worth contraband items were seized in custom checkpoints according to the commission. only in the first five months of 2012.
The commission said the haul included 210 million birr worth drugs and foreign currency, according to EPA.
The contraband goods are apprehended in different custom checkpoints including Addis Ababa Airport, Jigjiga, Moyale, Galafi, Mekele, Dire Dawa, Bahir Dar, and Jimma, according to the commission.
Last year Ethiopian Custom commission announced that contraband goods worth 3.16 billion birr have seized as they were being smuggled into the country between 2014 to 2018.
