At least 433 people were killed in 1,095 road accidents in the last three in Oromia regional state. This was disclosed by the region’s transport bureau, according to Addis Admas, Amharic weekly.
Bureau will install a speed limit device in a month’s time.
Vehicle speed limit will be installed in a month’s time in order to reduce the traffic accident which causes many damages and distractions in the region said Mihret Shanko, Oromia Transport bureau head in a statement he gave on Friday.
Last week 49 people were killed in just one day, in three separate car accidents in Oromia regional state.
Driving over the speed limit rampant reckless driving behaviors, poor road network, substandard road conditions are factors contributing to the high incidence of road traffic accidents in the region, according to him.
In similar statistics compiled by the Amhara region traffic bureau shows that road accidents shot up alarmingly in the given period, with the total number of deaths reaching 183 and the number of those injured to 219 in road accidents recorded in the period.
According to the information from the region a total of 1109 people have deid last year in the region.
According to Federal Transport Authority, last year 4597 people have died in a traffic accident across the nation.
Though Ethiopia has one of the lowest per capita car ownership in the world, deadly traffic accidents are fairly common, with the blame put on bad roads, flawed driving license issuance system and lax enforcement of safety rules.
