Japanese consumer goods and OTC pharmaceutical corporation Rohto Pharmaceutical
Co has begun the sale of “Rohto Ice” eye drop sale in Ethiopia, the company announced on Thursday.
It is the company’s first eye drop product to be sold in Africa after it recently received permission to do so from Ethiopian authorities.
The eye drop is a prescription drug that will be sold at hospitals and pharmacies through a local agent. It contains zinc sulfate hydrate, which is effective in curbing inflammation for eyes affected by strong ultraviolet rays.
The product, currently aimed at those with high disposable incomes, will be produced and shipped from factories in Japan. The company is looking into producing the drug locally in the future.
Rohto is exploring the African medical products market, which is expected to grow as economic development leads to longer life spans for those in many African countries.
