Biruk Zewdu, a student of Ayelech Degefu Memorial School in Bahir Dar scored 645, the highest grade throughout Ethiopia in this year’s national school-leaving exam.
“Through hard work and persistence, it’s possible to score the needed result,” said Biruk in an interview with Amhara Mass Media Agency.
His sister Mahlet Zewudu who is now attending her university classes was also scored one of the highest marks scored by students from Bahir Dar who sat for secondary school leaving certificate examination.
Ayelech Degefu Memorial School (ADMS) was built by athlete Haile Gebresilassie in 2000.
Biruk is a mannered student, we expect him scored the highest results, said Haile.
Biruk made my 19 years dream come true, he made history, we are proud of him, said Haile in a telephone interview with AMMA, He also mentioned that Biruk was providing tutors for other 13 students and helped score more than 600.
Biruk was one of the students who were well-behaved and academically advanced, Abinet Bihonegn his former English teacher witnessed.
Biruk pointed out that he was prepared by attending tutoring classes at school and reading in a library.
“With all the support from my family, my mother encouraged me to study in my own way,” he said expressing his happiness for efforts wouldn’t go without reward.
” Entrance exam is not a measure of intelligence, it is the product of hard work, there may be students who are better than me if they could work diligently the desired result will be achieved”, Biruk advised.
