Prime minnister Abiy Ahmed replaced Yonas Desta, Director General of the Ethiopian Authority for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage with Mulugata Fiseha (PhD), close sources disclose.
Assuming this portfolio very young since 2011, Yonas has lead the efforts of Ethiopian Heritage Inventory, Research, Conservation and Development policy and strategic implementation endeavors stone and Wood conservation projects like the Lalibela Biete’Gabriel Rufael and Gologota Mikael churches and YEHA temple are among the highlights and he have also been very active in counter illicit trafficking and antiquities repatriation.
He has served as chair of the National Culture and Tourism projects Facilitation Platform, member of the Ethiopian Tourism Board, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for 4 years and Intergovernmental Committee Chair in 2016, Board member of the African World Heritage Fund, and University board. He has also served as a member of the Ethiopian Future Cities Sustainability Master Plan (FCSMP) Core National team.
He has also served as the State Party representative to UNESCO and championed the inscription of 3 more elements to the UNESCO list which brought Ethiopia to be the highest in Africa and even had been awarded a cultural entitlement “Iffa-Gada” in 2016 from the Oromo Aba Geda and “Kayamo” from the Sidamas.
Previously, he held the position of Director for Research, Development and Support of the Ethiopian apparel industry in Investment, Production and Marketing for the government initiative of Globally Competitive leather products Industry both at the former Ministry of Trade & Industry and also had served as a Supervising Water Treatment Plant Engineer at the ELiCO-Midroc Technology Group Ethiopia.
Yonas is working for his PhD in Business Leadership and holds MBA from ABH-Jimma University. He also has MSc. in Environmental Engineering and BSc. in Chemical Engineering both from the Addis Ababa University.
