About 1.5 billion birr is needed to help internally displaced people in Amhara regional state said a committee which is formed under the Organization for Rehabilitation and Development in Amhara (ORDA).
Speaking at the press conference held yesterday at the region’s capital, Melaku Fanta, director at ORDA said that, the regional government has worked in different ways to support IDPs in the region.
A fundraising event which is aimed at collecting money and collect materials to support IDPs will be held at Sheraton Addis Hotel in Addis Ababa on March 16, 2019, said Melaku.
Beyond raising money and material aids the event is expected to strengthen unity and cooperation among people, he added.
The fundraising event is aimed to provide help for more than 90 thousand people who currently reside in different temporary shelters across the region.
Regional reports indicate more than 80,000 people are displaced throughout the region. Although recent inter-communal conflicts in areas bordering Northern Gondar zone and Tigrai regions contributed to the sudden spike in the number of IDPs in the region;
Displaced people in the region also come from Oromia (Buno Bedele, Jimma, Nekemt and KelemWellega zones), Benishangul Gumz (Kemash zone), SNNP (Bench Maji zone) and Somali regions since October 2017. Overall, the IDPs lack adequate access to basic services such as food, water, and sanitation, education, health, shelter and livelihoods
Recent rapid humanitarian assessments have highlighted the criticality of the IDPs’ situation and the urgent needs they face in terms of basic assistance including food, shelters, and emergency non-food items.
