Former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has been appointed to chair an election observation mission to Nigeria, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs Minata Samata announced today that during a press conference held in Addis.
According to her Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairperson of African Union Commission has recently agreed with the government of Nigeria to send an election Observer mission to Nigeria.
General elections will be held in Nigeria on 16 February 2019 to elect the President and the National Assembly. They will be the sixth quadrennial elections since the end of military rule in 1999.
This is the second appointment for Hilemariam to witness elections in the African Nations since he resigned from his position.
July last year, Hailemariam was also Lead AU Election Observation Mission to Zimbabwe.
Hailemariam has resigned as Prime Minister of Ethiopia and EPRDF chairperson on 15 February 2018 in response to the fallout from mass protests and unrest in 2016
