Federal Police announced today the arrest of Five senior officials of Benshangul Gumz in connection with recent violence in regions border with Oromia regional state, according to a report from EBC, the state broadcaster.
Police have arrested officials including regions security deputy head and former Assosa mayor, today after an operation to arrest the suspects.
According to the report, police have suspected these people for inflaming the September’s violence which left 10 people dead, hundreds of thousands displaced from the area.
The arrests of additional suspects will continue, said police.
Days ago, Addisu Arega,ODP rural organization & political department bureau head, also announced the arrest of 208 suspects in connection with the recent unrest in Oromia and Benshangul Gumuz.
Last week several including a dozen Oromia police offices have been killed due to a conflict and unknown numbers of civilians and a large-scale internal displacement is registered following the violence in the area.
In a statement, it released following an emergency session by is an executive committee, the Oromo Democratic Party (ODP), the party governing Oromia and is chaired by PM Abiy Ahmed, admitted a troubling deterioration of security in parts of the region.
